He decides to fight for Lois. He goes and talks to her, and after some very emotional moments, they admit their feelings for each other. 7:19:38 PM: Iolanthe: But, in the second part of the trilogy, Lois is horrified when Superman shows his feelings for her and she realizes that she still has feelings for Superman. How can I do this, she asks herself, when I've just told Clark that I love him? 7:19:57 PM: Iolanthe: And, in the third story of the trilogy, the big revelation occurs, and our favorite couple have to deal with it. Bob puts in angst, drama, and.. Dare I mention that all ends happily? 7:20:21 PM: Iolanthe: Our second nominee is "The Buddy System" by Sue S. In this adaptation of "Fly Hard", the terrorist leader handcuffs Lois to Clark and announces that from now on, they're on the buddy system. If one of them tries something, their buddy will be shot. 7:20:57 PM: Iolanthe: Lois and Clark get locked together in a supply closet ö the close quarters allow for some private, and serious, conversation, with Sue providing the trademark snappy L&C banter. Plus, an almost-kiss! 7:21:36 PM: Iolanthe: (At least at the start. The kiss is interrupted by terrorists, by Lois almost getting shot, and by a big revelation.) 7:22:17 PM: Iolanthe: And you know what? Clark and Lois never *do* get their kiss in this fic! But a lot of other stuff happens! 7:22:42 PM: Iolanthe: Our third nominee is M.L. Thompson's "If At First You Don't Succeed", based on the episode "I'm Looking Through You." Clark is the only one who notices that the world is going through the same four days over and over.and over. and over. and over. 7:23:25 PM: Iolanthe: Who could be doing this? How can Clark stop it? And how can he ever have a relationship with Lois when, no matter what he does, time cycles back to four days earlier, and Lois forgets everything they did? What would *you* do if there were no consequences, no penalties? 7:24:27 PM: Iolanthe: I don't want to spoil this one totally, so let me just say that Clark and Lois figure it out, stop the bad guy (hint: you have to get him to say his name backwards), and save the day once again. Plus, there are hints that the revelation may be coming a little earlier than in show canon. Lois might have some underlying memory of all those days she repeated. and she's found out that Clark Kent has some hidden depths. 7:25:28 PM: Iolanthe: Our next nominee is "That Ole Revelation of Mine" by BrenRen. Based on "That Old Gang Of Mine", Henderson points out to Lois that there should have been a lot of blood. Why, if Clark was shot three times in the chest, was there no blood? 7:26:13 PM: Iolanthe: Lois figures it out, of course, and calls Martha: "Just tell him he'd better get his shiny red butt over here, or I swear to God, I will never speak to him again." 7:26:49 PM: Iolanthe: After the anger, Lois finds that she has to acknowledge her feelings. A little Clark-groveling later, and our favorite couple... well, things are looking a lot better for their relationship. Smooching! 7:27:22 PM: Iolanthe: Our next nominee is also based on the episode "That Old Gang Of Mine" -- it's "TOGOM For 2009" by Tank Wilson. 7:28:20 PM: Iolanthe: Tank doesn't give our heroes an easy answer -- in this fic, it's been 15 years since Clark Kent was "killed" in front of everyone. Clark has been stuck in Superman's identity since then, and he can't commit to Lois. So they see each other infrequently, and miss each other. 7:29:29 PM: Iolanthe: Lois still works for the Daily Planet, but Jimmy has been killed (which seems to happen quite frequently in Tank fics J), and Perry has passed away. Clark "died" years ago, so there's really nothing keeping Lois there. 7:30:30 PM: Iolanthe: Then Superman gets a load of kryptonite buckshot. He might never be super again. 7:30:46 PM: Iolanthe: What can they do now? Well, maybe go off and live together? And Lois has to get a haircut. (Strange how that seems to happen quite often in Tank fics, too! J ) 7:32:16 PM: Iolanthe: Our final nominee is "A World Without Superman" by Dandello. It starts out as an adaptation of "All Shook Up", but goes on to involve, or make reference to, most of the episodes in the first season. It turns out that the Nightfall Asteroid was laced with Kryptonite - not good for our Clark! 7:32:57 PM: Iolanthe: Well, this lengthy and meaty fic has moments too numerous to mention. Let's just say that, although Superman is missing, Clark Kent is still there, and somehow things work out fine during Season One, even sans superpowers. 7:33:48 PM: Iolanthe: Henderson makes an appearance, and he turns out to have unexpected abilities and associates! 7:34:20 PM: Iolanthe: I wish I could say more, but this complex fic defies easy characterization. Technically, of course, every story with any character interaction at all is a "relationship" but we're talking about the good stuff here. 7:46:57 PM: ChiefPam: I mean, we have authors who are capable of writing intricate and amazing A-plots, but for me, anyway, the real attraction is the B-plot. The relationship. 7:47:12 PM: ChiefPam: This category was started to recognize stories that may not have much of an A-plot, but are deliciously chock-full of B-plot. That B-plot can be almost anything, though. 7:47:26 PM: ChiefPam: Maybe it's involuntary universe-hopping, body-swapping, space travel gone wrong, or two strangers encountering industrial-strength pheremones. Maybe it's a new twist on an episode, or an attempt to recover from an epic mistake. FOLCs are endlessly creative. 7:47:46 PM: ChiefPam: But the point is, the story is all about Lois & Clark's interactions, their emotions. The love, the angst, the joy, and the pain.
