Chat with FoLCs in #kerthchat - Download the sounds from http://www.lcficmbs.com/kerthawards/sounds.html' [17:01] Hey guys and Welcome to the 2006 Kerth awards ceremony. [17:02] Dont forget, to get the total experience from these awards download the sounds from: http://www.lcficmbs.com/kerthawards/sounds.html [17:03] * ChriscyK has joined #kerthawards [17:03] [BanAnna SOUND] [17:03] This year we welcome the new Kerth team which includes: Our Kerth coordinator Kaethel, Yvonne and Tricia who helped with nominations and voting and me and El on the technical front! [17:04] * LCArtemis has joined #kerthawards [17:04] Since I'm not one for big speeches, lets get things started with our frist presenter: Saskia with Best Super Short Story [17:04] * AMCiotola sets mode: +v Saskia [17:04] * Sound request: cannot find 'applause1.wav' [17:04] [BanAnna SOUND] [17:04] Good morning, afternoon, evening or night, fellow folcs! [17:05] I am here to present Best Super Short Story, so I thought I'd keep it traditionally short. [17:05] This year we had five fantastic stories running for the award. Five stories that each deserve to win in their own right. The choice was incredibly hard, and I guess many of Rat's pins were used here. [17:05] But let's take a look at the nominees: [17:05] We have a story about Perry realising he made a wrong assumption as he grieves about Clark's death in a TOGOM rewrite. Then there is the story of a man dying and desperately trying to get his children to safety with Superman's help before he passes out. [17:05] Next, there is the tale of Clark saying the wrong thing and as a result, Lois walks away in a heartbeat. We also have a story filled with hope that finally brings our favourite couple together. And finally, two short pieces in which Lois realises just who Clark Kent really is and how both deal with the resulting situation. [17:06] So the nominees are: [17:06] Because He Can Yodel by Chris Carr [17:06] Choices by David [17:06] Echo by David [17:06] Giving Up and Giving In by Nicole Sullivan [17:06] No Excuse/No Excuse at All by Anna Botsakou [17:06] * LaurieD has joined #kerthawards [17:06] And now, without further ado, the winner is... [17:06] [BanAnna SOUND] [17:06] Oh crap, I dropped my glasses. Excuse me for a second while I go look for them. [17:07] [BanAnna SOUND] [17:07] * Saskia mumbles something about needing to get contacts... [17:07] Someone want to be kicked? [17:07] Ah, there they are! Sorry, again. Now where was I? [17:07] Oh right, the envelope. [17:07] [BanAnna SOUND] [17:07] LOL [17:07] And the winner is: [17:07] we have a tie! [17:07] Because He Can Yodel by Chriss Carr [17:07] * hachiban has joined #kerthawards [17:08] and Giving UP and GIving In by Nicole Sullivan! [17:08] * Wendymr is now known as Krissie [17:08] [BanAnna SOUND] [17:08] congrats to both! [17:08] * Harv has left #kerthawards [17:08] * AMCiotola sets mode: +v NicoleS [17:09] THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! [17:09] * AMCiotola sets mode: -v Saskia [17:09] I am trying to pick my jaw up off the floor! [17:09] so WOW and THANK YOU! [17:09] I honestly don't know what to say! Oh! [17:13] Its name is... *GASP* Real Life! [17:13] Yes, FoLCs, it’s true! Real Life is after us! [17:13] Are we doomed to be drawn away from the comfort and joy of reading and writing fic, though? NO! There IS a way out of it, and it’s called a Short Story! [17:14] A Short Story can be from 11 to 50 KBs long, which means it’s enough to keep you in the FoLC world for a significant amount of time, but will allow you to return to Real Life before the Demands come after you with the pitchforks. [17:14] The Best Short Story Kerth is an award for the greatest contributions to the noble purpose of fooling Real Life. Let’s take a moment to remember them: [17:14] * LoisLane9397 has left #kerthawards [17:14] 'All the King’s Horses', by David [17:14] 'All’s Fair in Love and Arm Wrestling', by Erin Klingler [17:14] 'Cheese of the Month', by Susan Young [17:15] 'My Interview With Superman'/'My Date With Lyn'/'My Television Debut', by Pam Jernigan [17:15] and 'Time Enough For Tears', by Julie Stars. [17:15] And the winner is... [17:15] [BanAnna SOUND] [17:15] 'My Interview With Superman'/'My Date With Lyn'/'My Television Debut', by Pam Jernigan! [17:15] [BanAnna SOUND] [17:15] Congrats! [17:16] * LoisLane has joined #kerthawards [17:16] OMG, I really can't believe this! [17:17] I spent so much time telling myself not to get my hopes up that I haven't come up with any speech... [17:17] * Kaethel gets the smelling salts... [17:17] but I do have to thank everybody on the boards for being so encouraging and bullying me into writing sequels [17:18] This makes up for me being sick today [17:18] okay, I'm done... [17:18] need the stretcher? ;) [17:18] Congrats Pam! [17:18] Sorry but DocJill left for a bit .... [17:18] no, I'll wobble off just fine on my own, thanks [17:19] Okay next up is Best Waffy. [17:19] * Kaethel is now known as CatBru [17:19] As CatherineB could not be here, Kaethel will paste her speech ... [17:19] Hello and welcome to the WAFFy category for the 2006 Kerth awards! My name is Catherine Bruce, but due to unavoidable circumstances I was unable to make it this evening. Afternoon. Morning... er, right, anyhoo, I am unable to copy and paste this speech myself. [17:20] Contrary to popular (or at least mine, anyway) misconception, a WAFFy is NOT a delightful breakfast item covered in butter and syrup or strawberries and whipped cream and served with a side of bacon and eggs. No, WAFF stands for Warm and Fuzzy Feelings. [17:20] What's with the Y you ask? It makes it an adjective. Of course this SHOULD be easy to memorise, but if you're like some people *whistles innocently* you have to ask every time you go online... SO while a WAFFy is NOT a delightful breakfast item, it is certainly no less filling, more fluffy, and a hundred times sweeter. [17:20] And now on to the nominations! [17:20] All's Fair in Love and Arm Wrestling by Klingler, Erin -- During a boring day at work, all bet on an armwrestling match between our favorite reporting team. Place your bets! Who will win? [17:20] Catalyst Jackson, by Sam -- Cat and Lois assigned TOGETHER for an article? Who shall ever sooth the murderous urges that arise in Ms Lane? [17:21] Just a Little Experiment by Richards, Wendy -- Is it the man? To find out, Lois asks her partner to help her in a little experiment that makes MY heart flutter. [17:21] Lonely this Christmas? by Richards, Wendy (where have I read that name before?) -- Tis the season to be a family, and Lois decides the best thing for our favorite superhero is to invite him to a Christmas dinner with Clark and herself. But, wait... Isn't Clark...? [17:21] Sunrise, by Sunset Hazel -- A serene look into the love of two people, for each other and for things as different as a sunrise is from a sunset. [17:21] When You Say You Love Me by Richards, Wendy (the feeling of Deja Vu has returned!) Clark feels hurt by Lois' attraction to Luthor. Lois figures something out about Clark. [17:21] * LCArtemis has left #kerthawards [17:21] And the winner of the 2006 Best WAFFy story goes to... [17:21] * CatBru tears open envelope with great flourish [17:22] [BanAnna SOUND] [17:22] Kathryn Bruce! [17:22] [BanAnna SOUND] [17:22] ...No wait. That's my cable bill. Sorry! I really have to get them to correct my name... [17:22] And again, the winner is... [17:22] Drumroll! *drlrlrlrlrlrlrlrlrlrlrlrlrlrlrlrlrlrlrlrlrlrlrlrl* [17:22] [BanAnna SOUND] [17:22] When You Say You Love Me, by Wendy Richards!!!!!!!!!! [17:22] congrats Wendy! [17:23] [BanAnna SOUND] [17:23] * Harv has joined #kerthawards [17:23] * Deejrhodes has joined #kerthawards [17:23] * CatBru is now known as Kaethel [17:23] * Wendymr stumbles up onto the platform [17:23] I'm stunned! Thank you, thank you! [17:23] I seriously never expected this. Me, winning WAFFy??? [17:23] That's like TANK winning WAFFy, isn't it? [17:24] this story was written for Kaethel's birthday last year, so it's kind of ironic that it just won tonight [17:24] because in France it's now Kaethel's birthday once more :) [17:24] so thanks to Kae for inspiring me to write the story in the first place [17:24] thanks to Krafty for BRing for me [17:24] * YDartVader has joined #kerthawards [17:24] and THANK YOU to all of you for voting for it. I'm honoured, proud and almost fainting ;) [17:24] * Wendymr falls off the stage [17:25] Congrats and thanks Wendy! [17:25] So I was talking to JKR the other day. I said, "Jo, maybe Hermione is destined to be with Ron. I think I may have seen the errors of my ways ..." [17:25] * EvilAuntY picks Wendy up and helps her hobble back to the green room [17:25] But the I thought APRIL FOOLS!!! Hermione and Harry all the way!!! [17:26] Next up is NicoleS to present Best Comedy! [17:26] * judemustard has joined #kerthawards [17:26] * ChiefPam sets mode: -v AnnaBtG [17:26] * ChiefPam sets mode: +v NicoleS [17:26] Hi guys! Okay, since I have everyone’s attention, I wanted to tell you something kind of important. [17:26] I’m Ultra Woman. [17:26] I am! [17:27] No, don’t say that. I mean, I did have a few. But, I *am* Ultra Woman. [17:27] Okay, fine I’ll prove it. [17:27] * NicoleS is now known as UltraLIAR [17:27] * UltraLIAR is now known as NicoleS [17:27] okay that wasn't what i... nevermind [17:27] Okay, that was not what I wrote. Whatever. I can’t prove it. Well not just now. Those sisters with the beamy thing took away my powers for awhile. But I would *not* ever lie about something like this! And STOP saying that! Please! They were blended drinks. That’s mostly ice! [17:27] I’m not drunk, I’m Ultra! [17:28] Okay, fine, if you don’t believe me, I’ll show you my cave! It’s really cool. It’s got a Hello Kitty rug! [17:28] Oh no. Not you again! Tempus! Die. [17:28] DIE!!!!! [17:28] Ooh. Weird. He did. He died. What an obedient man. Maybe I’ll just go get another… [17:28] OMG – well this is strange. Usually Tempus just comes to kill me and prevent Utopia. Very strange. Seems this time he just wanted to rearrange my kitchen! [17:28] Okay, cape off, spiffy presenter outfit on. [17:28] I am so excited for this category because it’s such a good one! Best Comedy! These authors have provided us all with something we all desperately need after all the angst and drama. A good laugh and a big smile. So thank you, all! These were fantastic stories. We have a NAN and a SAM and a PAM and a… WENDY! [17:29] The nominees for Best Comedy this year are: [17:29] Bidding for Attention by Wendy Richards [17:29] Kitchen Crusade by Nan Smith [17:29] Super Smashed by Sam Jackson [17:29] Superman Day by Pam Jernigan [17:29] SUCH great stories!!!!! There's a window similar to this one that should say TriciaW [17:32] click on itr [17:32] haha!!! [17:32] okay! [17:32] or the bottom. Or maybe the side. But it should be red... [17:32] LOL... that was ALL on purpose!!! [17:33] sorry guys. Technical issues. [17:33] suspense! [17:33] uh huh [17:33] Okay... if you all remember the nominees. [17:33] the WINNER is... [17:33] [BanAnna SOUND] [17:33] Kitchen Crusade by Nan Smith! [17:33] [BanAnna SOUND] [17:33] * EvilAuntY sets mode: +v NanL [17:33] Eek! [17:33] Congrats NAN! [17:33] * NanL staggers onstage. [17:34] Um ... [17:34] WEll, seeing as I figured I didn't have a chance, I'm going to have to wing this. [17:34] My mind just went blank [17:35] Anyhoo, Comedy isn't usually something I'm very good at, but this little story cme about when I was cleaning out the fridge in my sons' room. [17:35] Fortunately, it wasn't nearly as bad as Lois's fridge, but there *were* a few scince experiments in there ... [17:36] * ChiefPam sets mode: -v NicoleS [17:37] You get inspiration from pretty odd places, sometimes. Anyway, I think my heart may slow down in an hour or so, so before I pass out from hyperventilation, I'd like to say thanks to everyone who voted for my story. [17:37] It's wonderful just to be nominated, but against this kind of competition -- well, words fail me. So thanks a whole lot. [17:38] Congrats and thanks, Nan!! I hear these awards are chocolate so enjoy ;) [17:38] The best kind of chocolate - virtual ... no calories or fat! [17:38] * EvilAuntY sets mode: -v NanL [17:38] And now for our first commercial break [17:38] Labby the stage is yours ... [17:38] * EvilAuntY sets mode: +v Lab-Rat [17:39] The ad breaks in this evening's entertainment come to you from the Fundraiser DVD committee. [17:39] Look out for an announcement of how you can get your very own copy of the DVD later in the show! [17:39] Keep those eyes peeled! You won't want to miss this collection of fun from some of the most talented FoLCs in the fandom, who have generously donated their time and talent to the cause. [17:39] From music videos to trailers, to fanfic posters...and stories! [17:39] Lots and lots of stories! [17:40] As a taster, let's take a snippet from one of them.... (and look out for more snippets on the mbs and mailing list soon!) [17:40] Without A Trace [17:40] By Sheila Harper [17:40] * Jot has joined #kerthawards [17:40] Something snapped in Lois's memory. Hallucinations. Jefferson Cole. [17:40] She had to make sure the kids were safe. God only knew what that maniac was planning this time. She reached for Laura. "Come on, Laura. They aren't really here." [17:41] As her daughter's fingers tightened on hers, she looked back at the counter where she had left CJ. [17:41] He was still sleeping in his carrier, and her gaze swiveled around to Jonny, who was laughing and running through a goat, which nibbled obliviously at a sweater. [17:41] "Mom! Did you see that? I ran right through him." [17:41] "Jonny, come here!" If Jefferson Cole was loose, she needed to get the kids somewhere safe. [17:41] "What?" But even as he protested, he started toward her. Her kids knew better than to ignore that tone of voice. [17:42] Across the room, Mr. Martynowicz was examining a skirt one of the goats had been nibbling on. Lois kept walking toward the back counter. The clothes wouldn't be hurt. [17:42] Jefferson Cole's hallucinations couldn't hurt anything, couldn't interact with anything. They just tricked you into seeing something that wasn't there. [17:42] At the counter, she let go of Laura's hand and reached toward CJ-- [17:42] --just as he vanished. [17:43] To Be Continued. ;) [17:43] Da [17:43] Da [17:43] Daaaaaaaaa! [17:43] [17:43] Wanna know what happens to poor CJ? Donate to the Fundraiser DVD! Details on how to donate shortly! [17:43] [BanAnna SOUND] [17:44] You know that's so mean... To stop there ;) [17:46] Certainly is! [17:46] * Evil-afkish starts dancing on the table [17:46] * judemustard is now known as jude-AFK [17:46] C'mon, give us another one... [17:46] * EvilAuntY climbs up on the table with El [17:47] Hey, we need Tricia to teach us how to dance, El [17:47] yikes, just the one time I was taller than you :P [17:47] * Kaethel watches and takes pictures. [17:47] Alrighty, if you ladies will step off the table ... [17:47] * EvilAuntY pouts [17:47] Lessons are going cheap!! [17:48] I just put my tap shoes on! [17:48] Today (Tomorrow for us US folcs) is actually a special occasion! [17:48] Right now in France it's April 2nd! [17:48] It is?? [17:48] is it? [17:48] And everyone one knows what April 2nd is, right? [17:48] Ooh, do we get to sing? [17:49] yes, it's the day after April's Fool day! [17:49] and the day before April 3, too [17:49] Sing? Count me in! [17:49] So Karen is going to come up here and sing Happy Birthday to Kaethel, then present the award for Best Special Occasion Story [17:49] lol [17:49] * Harv has left #kerthawards [17:49] that's it. Celebrate me getting old. Grief. Some friends... ;) [17:49] * KarenT looks despairingly at what used to be the craft table, then does a double-take. [17:49] Wait. I'm singing? [17:50] At least you didnt get a card that says niffty nifty looks who's fifty this year [17:50] ROTFL [17:50] no, but Sara wished me a happy 54th. ;) [17:50] LOL!! [17:50] shame, when I'm only 24. For the fourth time. [17:51] Karen? [17:51] okay. But don't blame me if glass shatters [17:51] * KarenT clears her throat [17:52] that's okay. They already shattered a table... [17:52] o/~ Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday, dear Kaethel, happy birthday to you! o/~ [17:52] o/~ Happy birthday to you, you live in a zoo, you sme... o/~ [17:52] * KarenT coughs [17:52] Happy Birthday! [17:52] aww thank you :) [17:53] and lol [17:53] sorry, habit *sheepish grin* [17:53] * Naancy has joined #kerthawards [17:53] suuure. Go on, present your category ;) [17:53] * KarenT grins [17:53] Talk about a perfect lead-in! [17:54] * KarenT fumbles in a few pockets, and pulls out a well-worn and scribbled paper [17:54] I swore this year that I wouldn't go into raptures over a certain holiday that this category covers. After all, there are lots of holidays. [17:54] Thanksgiving, Easter, Rosh Hashanah, President's Day, Arbor Day, Memorial Day, Sweetest's Day, Secretary's Day. Tech Support Appreciation Day. *cough* [17:54] And of course, we can't forget special occasions. Birthdays. Weddings. Anniversaries. Buying a house. Getting a dog. First time a certain someone is made to sleep on the couch. And then the first time you get flowers. [17:54] Then I looked at the nominee list. And that plan went out the window, since four of the five stories features my favorite holiday. Ah, well. [17:55] No matter the holiday, all five of the nominees are excellent stories, and portray their given holiday quite well. [17:55] Be it from helping out friends and family members get what they want (or what you think they want!) for Christmas. Or despairing over not being able to spend the day with a certain someone. [17:55] Or, my yearly dilemma, what the heck to wear for Halloween! [17:55] So, in the order presented on the website, which I think is alphabetical, I present to you the nominees for Best Special Occasion Story: [17:55] The Ghost of Christmas Past by Wendy Richards and David [17:56] Lonely this Christmas? by Wendy Richards [17:56] Lucy Lane Is Coming to Town by Nicole Sullivan [17:56] Some Kind of Angel by Chris Carr [17:56] Trick or Treat: A Halloween Dilemma by Capes [17:56] And the winner is.... [17:56] [BanAnna SOUND] [17:56] oh, and good luck, everyone! [17:56] * KarenT rips open the envelope [17:56] Lucy Lane Is Coming to Town by Nicole Sullivan!!! [17:56] [BanAnna SOUND] [17:56] * jude-AFK has quit IRC (Signed off) [17:56] Congratulations! [17:56] * EvilAuntY sets mode: +v NicoleS [17:57] ohhhhh!!! Seriously??? [17:57] There are so many great stories up here in this category!! I did NOT expect this at alll! [17:57] THANK YOU! [17:57] THanks everyone on the boards who was so sweet about this story! [17:58] This was supposed to be a ten page, quick story (and a comedy)! [17:58] but anyway... not what happened in the end... [17:58] Yeah, we've all been there, Nicole [17:58] :)) [17:58] * LoisLane has left #kerthawards [17:59] THANK YOU GUYS so much! Thanks to everyone that voted for this one and to all the other nominees, those are some of my FAVORITE stories and authors :) [17:59] * NicoleS pulls cape and walks off stage in haze! [17:59] Congrats Nicole! [17:59] * EvilAuntY sets mode: -v NicoleS [17:59] * ChiefPam sets mode: -v Lab-Rat [18:00] Niext up is Best Mid-Length Story with your presenter Yvonne. [18:00] Ooh, me! [18:01] Mid-length sounds such a dull thing to be, doesn't it? [18:01] Neither short and pithy, nor epic and multi-layered, the mid-length story hovers somewhere in between, consigned to safe, comfortable-sounding adjectives like 'middling' and 'just right'. [18:01] . It's reasonable and sensible and easily digestible - heck, your mother would probably approve of it. [18:01] But are tonight's contenders safe and easily digestible? I'll let you be the judge. [18:01] First up, we have David's An Affair to Remember, in which an amnesiac Clark is poised to leap out the window and scare the living daylights out of Lois. [18:01] Next, we have Snave's Cherub, wherein a six-year-old Emma Kent saves a man from drowning. [18:01] * newsgrl has quit IRC (Signed off) [18:02] Then, there's Sara's For Old Times' Sake, where Lois is pushing an amnesiac Clark out the window and scaring the living daylights out of *him*. [18:02] What about Wendy and Dave's "The Ghost of Christmas Past", in which Clark is dead and Superman is barely existing? [18:02] Or Wendy's "A Twist of Fates", in which Lois is dead and Clark is barely existing? [18:02] * Jot has quit IRC (Signed off) [18:02] And finally, there's Wendy's "You Don't Know Me", wherein a depressed Superman gives Lois the short, sharp, shock treatment. [18:02] Are these safe? Easily digestible? [18:02] Who knows, but I do know that each one richly deserves its nomination for Best Mid-Length Story. [18:03] Now let's see who won....the envelope please, Tricia! [18:03] * EvilAuntY collects the envelope and tries to open it with shaking hands... [18:03] Darn, she glues these down *so* well! [18:03] [BanAnna SOUND] [18:03] * EvilAuntY gets out her shears and hacks away [18:04] Ah, ha! And the winner is.... [18:04] [BanAnna SOUND] [18:04] An Affair to Remember by David [18:04] [BanAnna SOUND] [18:04] * ChiefPam sets mode: +v KSaraSara [18:04] Well, Dave was SO sure he wasn't going to win... [18:05] but seems he forgot the "Don't show up" rule [18:05] He's terribly sorry that he couldn't be here, but I do have proff that he still dressed for th occasion! [18:05] Yes, FoLCs... he's wearing a bowtie: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v630/KSaraSara/02-04-06_0925.jpg [18:06] wow never knew Dave was a hand [18:06] must be handy to have around. [18:06] I'm sure he'll be fainting at work when I text him. And he'd want to thank all his hard working BRs, especially Yvonne... and he did say for me to thank myself.. [18:06] anyway... [18:06] Congrats on a well deserved win, Dave!! [18:07] BONUS!!!!!! [18:07] oh! sorry is it my turn again?? [18:07] Congrats Dave!!! [18:08] Speaking of Dave ... Here he is to present Best Revelation [18:08] * AMCiotola spins into Dave8 [18:08] * AMCiotola is now known as Dave8 [18:08] I remember exactly where I was when I found out *the secret*. I remember 'cause... it's like... you know, one of those momentous occasions. [18:08] * EvilAuntY sets mode: -v KSaraSara [18:09] Life altering. [18:09] It's something I'll always remember. [18:09] 'Clark Kent is Superman.' You'll never forget where you were the first time you find discover *the secret*. [18:09] Me? [18:09] I was in a small suburb in Virginia. [18:09] Arlington, to be exact, about 40 minutes away from the airport where I found him. [18:09] We were in a department store looking for batteries about 200 years and... oh, about 2 or 3 days from the first time I'd seen him in electric blue spandex. [18:09] I'd figured it out, see. [18:10] I mean, it'd been obvious after I'd heard him go on and on... and on about the dangers of disarming the madman with the nuke who'd taken us as hostages. [18:10] Of course, *why* he was going on about the madman while we were in a department store in Arlington, 200 years after we'd met, I have no idea, but... [18:10] Yes. It was really, glaringly obvious. Even though I was a little... okay, I had a huge hangover after all the gin and tonic I'd inhaled the night before. [18:10] And... man, that spin thing he does? You've seen it, surely. [18:10] * Dave8 grimaces [18:10] I mean, it's cool, and you know... impressive... but it so did not help my headache. [18:11] Anyway, Clark Kent is Superman. [18:11] My head was pounding, but I figured it out listening to him talk about a madman in a department store in Arlington 200 years after we'd met. [18:11] And then I sent him cheese... [18:11] But nobody is going to believe that story, so I'll just borrow the one from the winner of this year's Best Revelation Story Kerth. [18:11] The nominees are: [18:11] Cheese of the Month Club by Susan Young [18:11] Good Samaritan by Aria [18:11] In A Better Place by CC Aiken [18:12] Revelations in Captivity by tvnerdgirl [18:12] Time Enough For Tears by Julie Stars [18:12] and When You Say You Love Me by Wendy Richards [18:12] Congratulations and good luck to all the nominees. :) [18:12] And the winner is... [18:12] [Dave8 SOUND] [18:12] In A Better Place by CCAiken [18:13] [BanAnna SOUND] [18:13] * Dave8 is now known as AMCiotola [18:13] * EvilAuntY sets mode: +v Lab-Rat [18:14] psst Rat ... usually only winners faint ... not those accepting on their behalf. [18:14] * Wendymr is now known as CCAiken [18:15] * EvilAuntY sets mode: -v Lab-Rat [18:15] CC seems to have the Kerth awards well and truly sussed out [18:15] over the past couple of years, the pattern has been: Send your apologies, and you will win [18:15] having said that, though, she wrote what was undoubtedly the best story of last year, if not of all time, and so it's no surprise at all that she's won this award [18:16] on behalf of CC, I'd like to thank everyone who enjoyed In A Better Place enough to nominate and vote for it [18:16] * SaaraB has quit IRC (Signed off) [18:16] Thank you all very much indeed!! [18:16] * CCAiken cuddles the Kerth award and runs off before *anyone* can grab it from her [18:17] * CCAiken is now known as Wendymr [18:17] Thanks Wendy and Congrats CC [18:17] * LaurenW has joined #kerthawards [18:18] Ya know, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, IMHO, did not do the book any justice! [18:18] However, there are many talented writers in the LnC Universe who did better than some of the actual writers of the show. [18:18] So next up is Tricia to present: Best Episode Adaptation [18:19] I think that FoLCs are very privileged to have so many talented authors willing to share their work. :) [18:19] It's a great pleasure to be here to present the award for the Best Episode Adaptation. [18:19] I'm sure every fan has questioned various aspects of each episode. Why did it end there? What did Lois and Clark think about a particular moment? [18:20] Why did Lois accept Lex's proposal? Why was Clark such a lunkhead at times? What if Lois discovered Clark's secret in season one? [18:20] What if Clark thought his dreams were reality when he had amnesia? What did happen to those Smart Kids? [18:20] This category gives fanfic writers the opportunity to explore all the unanswered questions and add their own special touch to the episode. [18:20] * judemustard has joined #kerthawards [18:21] The nominees this year are adaptations of All Shook Up, TOGOM, Honeymoon In Metropolis and Smart Kids. [18:21] This year's nominees for Best Episode Adaptation are: [18:21] An Affair to Remember by David [18:22] Curiosity Killed the Reporter by ML Thompson [18:22] * norths_crick has joined #kerthawards [18:22] For Old Times' Sake by Sara [18:22] Smart Teens by Susan Young [18:22] To Wake From Dreams by Nicole Sullivan [18:23] Good luck to all the nominees! [18:23] And the winner is... [18:23] [BanAnna SOUND] [18:23] Now where did I put that envelope? [18:24] in the Word doc in the other window? [18:24] Okay, I've lost my own envelope! [18:24] use alt tab, it's faster [18:24] Found it!! :)) [18:25] [BanAnna SOUND] [18:25] The winner is: Curiosity Killed the Reporter by ML Thompson [18:25] [BanAnna SOUND] [18:25] Congratulations ML! [18:25] * EvilAuntY is now known as MLThompson [18:26] Well, if ML were here, I'm sure she'd want to thank her BRs and everyone who read her story and gave feedback [18:26] Otherwise, she might bop up and down a bit on the channel, so I'll just simulate that... [18:26] * MLThompson bops up and down a bit [18:27] ...and then she might wave with a big grin on her face, clutch her award and make her way triumphantly off the stage [18:27] * MLThompson waves with a big grin on her face, clutches her award and makes her way triumphantly off the stage [18:28] * MLThompson is now known as EvilAuntY [18:28] Thanks Y and congrats ML [18:28] * AMCiotola sobs! [18:28] NO! No! no! ... Ron and Hermione DON't belong together!!! [18:28] and OMG!!! Not Ginny .... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! [18:29] * AMCiotola grabs a tissue *snoooooooork [18:29] ok so I have a one track mind ... [18:29] * AnnaBtG has quit IRC (Signed off) [18:29] Next up to present Best Tearjerker is Doranwen [18:29] * EvilAuntY sets mode: +v Doranwen [18:29] While all FoLCs love happy endings (except for perhaps Tank ;)), we differ in our opinions of how quickly one should get there. Some love short fics with waff all throughout. Others prefer a little angst mixed in. But this category is dedicated to those who wallow in the most heartrending angst before reaching happily-ever-after. [18:29] * judemustard has quit IRC (Signed off) [18:30] The category of Best Tearjerker contains the stories which kept tissue-making companies doing well this year. They had the power to bring tears to the eyes of even the FoLCs who usually don't cry at fics or movies. [18:30] * Doranwen points to self and blushes [18:30] The situations which give us--and the characters--such agony vary from almost certain death to sudden trauma to the worst sort of abuse imaginable. [18:30] What could be more heartwrenching than the likelihood of Lois dying in less than 24 hours? Our favorite couple did a bit of crying in that situation--and so did most of us as well. [18:31] Or how about a sinister attack that leaves Lois reeling, and Clark with her? The pair had to play a dangerous game of hide and seek to prevent it from ever occurring again. [18:31] Then there's the return of Alt-Lois to her own universe, an event that should bring joy to both her and Alt-Clark, except she's been through something so awful that it will take a long strange trip to unite them. [18:31] * Zoe19 has joined #kerthawards [18:31] * Zoe19 has quit IRC (Read error: Connection reset by peer) [18:31] And when Lois marries Lex Luthor, and Superman disappears, leaving a man named Kenneth Clark running from his past, it leaves us FoLCs shedding more than a few tears. In a world where Lois and Clark seem made to be broken, can they ever put each other back together again? [18:31] Taking a month to tell the woman you love that you didn't actually die is agonizingly preventible. Once done, however, Clark will have to wake from dreams and face the reality of how he's messed things up before Lois--and all the FoLCs--cry themselves too sick. [18:32] Each of these stories has been specially noted this year for their great ability to elicit tears and related emotions, and are nominees for Best Tearjerker: [18:32] 24 Hours, by Wendy Richards [18:32] Hide and Seek, by Wanda Detroit [18:32] Long Strange Trip, by L [18:32] Made to Be Broken, by Sara [18:32] To Wake From Dreams, by Nicole Sullivan [18:32] And the winner is . . . [18:32] [BanAnna SOUND] [18:32] * Doranwen 's fingers accidently let the envelope slip, but she manages to snatch it out of the air before it reaches the floor [18:32] 24 Hours by Wendy Richards! [18:32] [BanAnna SOUND] [18:33] * Wendymr runs into the TARDIS to fly to the stage [18:33] I don't know if I should apologise or thank everyone at this point [18:33] * LaurieD has quit IRC (Signed off) [18:33] I'm not sure whether I ever had so many FOLCs yelling at me before - not even over For The Greater Good! [18:34] I'm so very pleased that everyone liked - is that the right word? - this story so much!! It meant an awful lot to me [18:34] I'm really, really pleased and shocked and delighted and very, very grateful [18:34] * Wendymr puts on lead shielding [18:34] and thank you :))))) [18:34] * Wendymr cuddles her Kerth, passes around the tissues and runs away :) [18:36] * EvilAuntY sets mode: -v Doranwen [18:37] * ccmx has joined #kerthawards [18:39] * ChiefPam sets mode: +v Lab-Rat [18:39] Lab Rat, you've got more fanfic snippets, haven't you? :) Come on up and tease us... [18:39] And now Rat is back on stage to give you more tortu... er... excerpts. [18:39] ;) [18:40] Well, last time we gave you a heartstopping cliffhanger. But it's not all drama and angst on our DVD. Let's dial it down a little and have some WAFFS! [18:40] * R-El has joined #kerthawards [18:40] Between Best Friends [18:40] By Tracey [18:41] She looked down at her hand as it lay on his arm. Of its own accord, her hand began to stroke the hard muscle beneath her fingers. [18:41] She felt like she was dreaming, her voice saying words she’d never speak out loud, her body language communicating with him in a way she’d never thought she would beyond her fantasies. [18:41] * Olga19 has joined #kerthawards [18:41] * Olga19 has quit IRC (Read error: Connection reset by peer) [18:41] "Clark, did you ever stop to think about what would happen?" she asked softly. [18:41] If he was thrown by the question, he didn’t show it. She watched him through her lashes; he was barely breathing, as if he thought he’d break the moment with the slightest of movements. [18:41] . Finally, he spoke, slowly, cautious of his word choice. “What would happen if…?” he repeated, seeking clarification. [18:42] Maybe it was the darkness that gave her courage. Maybe the closeness of his body had shattered her rational thought processes. Maybe the touch of his skin against her palm begged for so much of her attention that she had none to allocate for logical decisions. [18:42] * Deejrhodes has quit IRC (Ping timeout) [18:42] Whatever the reason, she continued, knowing she was treading on dangerous ground and changing their relationship with her every spoken word. [18:42] “Like right now,” she said softly. “What would happen right now if we weren’t ‘Lois and Clark, partners’? Or even ‘Lois and Clark, best friends’?” [18:43] It must have hit him where she was going with her question, because his eyes closed, his voice torn between a groan and a note of warning. “Lois, don’t…” [18:43] She pressed on, despite the protest, unconcerned with the consequences of what she was saying. “What would happen right now if we were just ‘Lois and Clark, man and woman’? What would happen then?” [18:43] To Be Continued... [18:43] And from [18:43] The Kiss Off [18:43] By CC Aiken and Erin Klingler [18:44] Lois would kiss anyone else. Anyone. Jimmy and his grin that ate Metropolis. Stan and his non-car repairing cussedness. Ralph and his obvious unfitness to be a member of the human race... or... ok. Not Ralph. [18:44] . Under no circumstances. But anyone else, almost everyone else, would be better than Clark. Her partner. Her friend. And the one she had wronged. [18:44] The two of them could hardly hold an unselfconscious conversation, so how were they supposed to kiss for hours? Although, kissing pretty much ruled out talking, didn’t it? So maybe... [18:44] “No.” She said it to herself as much as to Clark. Because something inside her, something in collusion with her gaze, which had picked him first and foremost, was leaning towards ‘Yes.’ Leaning hard towards ‘yes.’ In fact, wanting very badly to just say... ‘Yes.’ [18:44] “No,” she said again, louder, more firmly, just so all members of her psyche could get on board. “It’s a stupid idea.” [18:45] She swept the Kiss Off article into the waste basket. “I’ll just find another way. Wait for the insurance to pay out. Let Stan fix the damned brakes...” [18:45] “Oh. Well... Ok, then.” Clark turned to leave, and she could have sworn she could read the dejection in his shoulders. [18:45] For an instant, just a blink, something in his posture, something in those shoulders, slammed into her with overwhelming, disheartening familiarity. Whatever it was, it was another dismissal at her hands. Something she was all together too good at. [18:45] * RetroRose has joined #kerthawards [18:45] “Wait!” She leapt to her feet, grabbing for his arm, halting his retreat. “I didn’t mean picking you was stupid, Clark. Just... the whole idea. A contest. And... kissing... to win a car...” [18:46] To Be Continued... [18:46] Awwwwwww. Want more romance and WAFFs than you can shake a stick at? Start saving those donation pennies! [18:47] Thank you for those wonderfully tantalising extracts, LabRat! [18:47] and now we have the Official Launch of the Lois and Clark Website Fundraiser 2006! [18:47] We all love our favourite Lois and Clark websites, right? [18:47] The Fanfic Archive. Annesplace - the nfic Archive. The Fanfic Message Boards. The FoLCVideo site. The Kerths website. The Alt-Kerths website. They’re all an essential part of our L&C addiction. [18:48] These sites are maintained by dedicated FoLCs who put in a lot of hard work to keep them up and running. But it’s not only hard work that’s needed to keep these sites available to us. They need hard cash, as well. Domain names have to be paid for. Web space has to be paid for. Bandwidth, especially for FoLCVideo, has to be paid for. [18:48] Over the years, FoLCs have been extremely generous with donations for these sites. Last time we ran a fundraiser, we got enough money to keep the sites going for three years. But now we have the FoLCVideo and AltKerths sites as well. So your donations are needed more than ever. [18:48] This year, we have an extra-special treat. Many FoLCs have, for the past few months, been working very hard to bring you the FoLC Fundraiser DVD 2006. This contains stories by some of your favourite authors, some of which you’ve already seen extracts from, trailers or posters for every story, *and* music videos, and a real treat, The Super Speedy Adventures of Lois and Clark. [18:48] How can I get this wonderful DVD, I hear you ask? [18:49] Well, that’s simple. All you need to do is put your hand in your pocket and donate to the appeal for your favourite websites! In a short while, there will be posts on the message boards, fanfic list and elsewhere giving lists of people who will be collecting money around the world. [18:49] Anyone who donates a minimum of US$15 will automatically get a copy of the DVD when it’s available. And it’s going to be well worth it! So not only will you have the pleasure of knowing that you’re helping to keep your favourite Lois and Clark sites alive, but you will also have a fantastic souvenir of your love of the show. What could be better than that? [18:49] So keep an eye on the Fanfic Message Boards or the Archive or Annesplace or the fic list over the next 24 hours [18:49] and we'll tell you who to contact to arrange to make your donation [18:50] and a copy of the most exclusive DVD of the year could be in your hot little hands very soon! [18:50] * Wendymr waves an advance copy to tantalise everyone, and trips off the stage [18:51] And next we have Sara and Kaethel here from opposite sides of the world to present Best Use of Punctuation in a Fictional Story [18:51] * EvilAuntY sets mode: -v Lab-Rat [18:52] Sara!!!! Hey, Sara, it's me! Kae! Got a new haircut but don't you recognise me? [18:52] * EvilAuntY sets mode: +v KSaraSara [18:52] Oh, hey!! I haven't seen you in ages!! Seems like... eight months, even. [18:52] Yeah!! Goodness me, but you look great! Quite unlike that old friend of mine I met yesterday. Period was *so* upset! [18:52] Oh no! What happened? [18:52] Well, she went home early from work the other day. Heard some noises up-letters. Climbed onto the T to have a look. You'd never guess what she saw! [18:52] What?? [18:52] Her ellipsis! Her very own ellipsis, lying down alongside the colon. And trust me, they were *not* playing innocent word games. [18:52] * KSaraSara gasps [18:52] So the colon escaped through the window because she just didn't want to face the issue. [18:52] Coward! [18:53] And the ellipsis told the period: "With you, I always felt like there was something missing." [18:53] Well, I'm certainly glad she put a stop to that! [18:53] So they split. And now the poor period is single. :/ [18:53] Yeah. Problem is, things are not simple for the period. Being single, white and Kryptonian doesn't make it easy for her to find partners. [18:53] Aww!! :( [18:53] Well, I'll tell *you* something. That ellipsis is in for a big shock! [18:53] Is he?? [18:53] Oooh... juicy stuff. Spill! [18:53] I was talking to colon just the other day and she said she was going to get the punctuation-change operation. Wants to be a semi-colon, she said! [18:53] I tried to tell her it'd only make her half the woman she used to be, but she refused to listen. [18:53] * judemustard has joined #kerthawards [18:53] That's terrible! [18:53] Well, I guess some things are just made to be broken. Hopefully she won't regret it. Like the exclamation point... he used to be a colon too. Had the same surgery. Now he's on steroids just too feel bigger and more useful. [18:54] Yeah, but then the exclamation point had mitigating circumstances if you ask me. [18:54] Oh? [18:54] Yeah. Back before he became a he, the exclamation mark found the question mark wrapped around an asterisk and she - or he, now - just hasn't been the same since. [18:54] I mean, first she gave the question mark an ultimatum. 24 words to decide who she wanted to be with. [18:54] But you know how those two are. [18:54] Yeah, it's such a shame! The exclamation mark used to be such a straight-out girl, and the question mark was always asking her to bend the rules a bit. Looks like the question mark did the bending. [18:54] See, the exclamation mark is *just* like the period. This one always needs to shut everyone up somehow. No wonder the question mark strayed away. [18:54] Yeah, no kidding. [18:54] You know, exclamation mark's friend, underscore, was just plain mean if you ask me. He told him: "Just lie down and take it like a man, exclamation point. It's what I always do." [18:54] How rude! [18:55] I know! [18:55] Oh, hey! I read something in the paper the other day. The comma is in a coma. Apparently, they accused the semi-colon of pushing her off the sentence.. [18:55] * KSaraSara gasps! [18:55] No?! [18:55] They said she was gonna die. From what I've heard, she was already seeing the proverbial northern light at the end of the tunnel. [18:55] Oh no! That's awful! [18:55] But they managed to bring her back, thank goodness. And locked the semi-colon away. It was already scarcely good for anything, but now it's just going to sink into oblivion. [18:55] Of course, the parenthesis, who gave me all the details about that affair, wanted to keep everything hush-hush! [18:55] Yeah, you know how they always remind everyone in sight that curiosity kills the quotation mark. [18:55] Yeah, but it’s hard not to feel involved. Look at the hyphen. It’s always stuck smack dab in the middle of things. And the ampersand is tied up in knots about this! [18:55] Pfft. The ampersand has always been so self-centered. [18:55] Good point. [18:55] Almost like that stupid asterisk keeps butting into *every*one else's business. Ack! See?? It did it *again*. [18:55] * Cherazor has quit IRC (Signed off) [18:55] Yeah. See, just the other day, the asterisk was at it again. Trying to stop the apostrophe from kissing around. But like I told the apostrophe when she came round to complain to me: "Apostrophe, this is your life!" [18:55] * KSaraSara shakes her head sadly [18:56] Yeah, I saw the brackets taking care of her after that. You know how they always bend over backwards to please everyone. [18:56] Geesh. Now I know what the slash was talking about. [18:56] Oh? What's that? [18:56] With all those dramatic events around us, the slash told me it can never keep things straight. And neither can I! [18:56] * Triciaw clears her throat. [18:56] Um... you guys? [18:56] Yeah? [18:56] Yeah? [18:57] You're supposed to be presenting. [18:57] Whoops! [18:57] Ah, right! [18:57] We're here to present the Kerth Award for Best Use of Punctuation in a Fictional Story. [18:57] * Triciaw clears her throat again. [18:57] What? We're presenting now, like you asked! [18:57] Yeah, well... I mixed up the categories. It's actually Best Drama. [18:57] Oh! Okay. [18:57] We're on it! [18:57] The nominees for Best Drama are... [18:57] 24 Hours by Wendy Richards [18:58] Clark Kent, This Is Your Life by Yvonne Connell [18:58] Curiosity Series by ML Thompson [18:58] Made to Be Broken by Sara [18:58] Northern Lights by Gerry Anklewicz [18:58] And Single White Kryptonian by Shayne Terry [18:58] Ohhh! I never told you what the hash mark did to the slash twins! [18:58] Oh! What?! [19:00] okay, I *do* know how to use semi-colons, and I avoided any trouble with slash, but still... [19:00] don't you mean WendyComma? [19:00] nah, I'm fainting [19:00] Seriously, I never expected this *at all*. [19:00] Not when there were so many excellent stories in this category [19:00] thank you all so VERY much [19:01] You've all been so very kind to me in Lois and Clark fanfic :)))) [19:01] some day I hope I'll be inspired for L&C fic again, but in the meantime I'm just so bowled over by how nice you've been [19:01] thank you all. [19:01] * WendyComa passes out, but still clings to award [19:02] * WendyComa is now known as Wendymr [19:02] * EvilAuntY props up Wendy *yet again* [19:02] Congrats Wendy! [19:02] * ChiefPam sets mode: -v KSaraSara [19:02] thank you Wendy, and we still hold out the hope those awards of yours will help the Muse back ;) [19:02] the L&C Muse I mean ;) [19:03] And now to present Best Relationship is PAm! [19:03] Thank you! :) [19:04] * Lane has quit IRC (Ping timeout) [19:04] * ChiefPam straightens up her paja-- err, slinky black dress [19:04] * LaurenW has quit IRC (Signed off) [19:04] Drama and Comedy and Revelations, oh my! [19:04] * ccmx has quit IRC (Read error: EOF from client) [19:04] Not to mention all the other categories. Okay, show of hands: Who had trouble deciding which category to nominate stories in? [19:05] The thing is, it's really quite simple. [19:05] Whether the situation is grave or hilarious, WAFFy or angsty -- at heart, almost all of these stories are about Lois & Clark's relationship. [19:05] * ccmx has joined #kerthawards [19:05] But of course, if the K-Com went that route, we'd have only one category with fourty to fifty nominees, and that would be even worse than trying to figure out what story goes where. ;) So never mind. [19:06] Since we do have to subdivide stories, this category is reserved for the stories that explore all the various ways that our two heros can, well, relate. It's quite a diverse bunch! [19:06] In The Long Road Home, Erin shows us Lois and Clark's first meeting, and builds up from there. [19:06] In CC's In A Better Place, we see a newly acquainted Lois and Clark abruptly getting to know each other a *lot* better. [19:06] In Nan's Masquerade, alt-Lois and alt-Clark are busy figuring out how to have a relationship away from prying eyes. [19:07] Nicole's Lois strained her relationship with Clark to the utmost, when she begged him to attend his Best Friend's Wedding -- her wedding to Lex. [19:07] And in Wendy's You Don't Know Me, Lois shows Clark she knows him much better than he thinks -- but he doesn't even know if they can be friends anymore. [19:07] * Lane has joined #kerthawards [19:07] See? Different stages, different struggles, different challenges -- but one thing they have in common is a close look at how these two so-very-different people can come together, at work and at play. [19:08] But enough blathering on. The nominees for Best Relationship Story are: [19:08] In A Better Place [19:08] CCAiken [19:08] Long Road Home, The [19:08] Klingler, Erin [19:08] Masquerade [19:08] Smith, Nan [19:09] My Best Friend's Wedding [19:09] Sullivan, Nicole [19:09] You Don't Know Me [19:09] Richards, Wendy [19:09] and the winner is... [19:09] [BanAnna SOUND] [19:10] Now, you know, I'm not really fond of all the delaying tactics people use. I always said, if I were presenting, I wouldn't be that mean. I mean, how hard can it be to click on the little flashing box? But no, people have to pretend... [19:10] but really The winner is... [19:10] The Long Road Home by Erin Klingler [19:10] [BanAnna SOUND] [19:10] Congrats, Erin! [19:10] * DocJill has joined #kerthawards [19:11] Oh my gosh! I was so not expecting this! [19:11] With this kind of competition, I didn't think I stood a chance. [19:12] I absolutely have to thank Labrat, Tank, Paul, who were invaluable to me in plotting this out in the early stages, and to Labby again for so kindly offering to GE the monster for me :) [19:12] and to everyone on the fanfic messsage boards, who encouraged me to keep writing this. [19:12] Most of all, I need to thank CC Aiken. CC, I honestly could not have written this without you. You truly helped make this story what it is. :)))) [19:12] * DocClean has joined #kerthawards [19:12] Thanks, you guys! Honestly, I'm stunned! [19:12] * Wendymr is now known as WendyComa [19:13] Thanks and congrats Erin! [19:13] * AMCiotola is now known as alotoiCMA [19:13] and now to present Best Alternate Universe / Elseworlds Story is Julie! [19:13] * alotoiCMA is now known as AMCiotola [19:14] * AMCiotola sets mode: +v JulieS [19:14] Hi all! [19:14] * JulieS bows [19:14] Okay… before I start, I have something I need to get off my chest. [19:14] * JulieS takes the cat off herself so she can see the keyboard. [19:14] * DocJill has quit IRC (Ping timeout) [19:14] Better. Anyway…. [19:14] I had the weirdest dream last night. [19:14] I was living in San Francisco, right? And I was getting ready for bed one night. [19:15] Then I woke up in Metropolis. [19:15] In someone else's body! [19:15] And I wasn't even alone. [19:15] No, there was this guy with me... Kal, I think he said his name was. [19:15] He was actually really nice about it, though. That was a really good part of the dream... he was really strong and handsome and muscular and... [19:15] * JulieS coughs [19:15] Sorry, where was I? [19:15] Oh, yeah. He was strictly professional about it. Yes, he was. I was just a guest and I didn't take advantage of him thinking I was his girlfriend. At. All. [19:15] He helped me figure out what was going on, and before I knew it I was waking up in a different bed. [19:15] Not mine, though. It was a different bed, but Kal was still there. [19:15] Or, at least, well... *a* Kal. Because he wasn't nice this time. But it's okay, because he couldn't see me anyway. [19:16] I just sat there, like a ghost, contemplating looking for his girlfriend's lipstick, until I realised. [19:16] I had *wings*! Oh my God. I had wings! I was an angel! [19:16] I freaked out so much I woke up panting. I wish I hadn't, though, because it would've been neat to fly. [19:16] But you know what I learned from that dream? [19:16] Kerth reading is totally harmful to your night sleep. [19:16] When you actually make it to bed. [19:16] Anyway, what was I here for? [19:16] Ah, right, the Best Alt/Elseworld category. [19:16] The qualifying stories in this category involve parallel universes, alternate beginnings, major changes that make you go, "Wow, cool!" and crossovers with other fandoms. [19:16] They will terrify you, glue you to your chair and then make you fall out of it. [19:16] They'll have you up all night, anxious to find out what happens to our heroes as they make their way through one adventure after the other. [19:17] They'll melt your heart into a little puddle of WAFFiness and make you beg for more. [19:17] And since you probably want me to just get on with it, here are the nominees. [19:17] Clark Kent, This Is Your Life by Yvonne Connell, who brings us universe-hopping and misplaced wooden blocks, as well as a terrifying story of learning that trust is often misplaced. [19:17] Sequel to Hearts Divided: Hearts United by Pam Jernigan, who brings us Kal-the-human-alien and Lois and her awesome girlfriends, as they race to save the Earth... and Kal. [19:17] The Long Road Home by Erin Klingler, who brings us a story about finding your way home all across the country in the most unexpected of places. [19:17] Long Strange Trip by Leela, who tells the tale of learning to forget the past and love the person you're with, no matter who he looks like. [19:17] and Some Kind of Angel by Chris Carr, who brings us Christmas, angels, and a touching story of sacrifice. [19:17] Good luck to all! [19:17] And the winner is... [19:17] Oh, I know and you don't, nyeah, nyeah nyeah! [19:18] Sorry, I had an April Fools moment. [19:18] And the winner is… [19:18] now, I know it's a tradition to fumble the envelope, but I'm pretty good with those [19:18] * JulieS gets the envelope opener [19:18] and the winner is.... [19:18] Long Strange Trip by L! [19:19] congrats Leela!!! [19:19] [BanAnna SOUND] [19:19] * ChiefPam pops back up to center stage... [19:19] thanks so much, guys, and Julie that was a great speech, and honestly, I never expected... um, hang on [19:20] I'm actually up here to accept on Leela's behalf, since she was observing the "don't show up to win" rule :) [19:20] I'm sure she'd like to thank everyone who commented and encouraged her over the years [19:20] what was it, four or five years? [19:21] * CatBru has joined #kerthawards [19:21] but totally worth it -- this was an awesome story, and if I've got to lose, this is the kind of story I'm honored to lose to! :) [19:22] Thanks Pam! [19:22] * ChiefPam grabs the award and looks at it longingly before putting it somewhere safe for sending to Leela... [19:22] and Congrats to Leela ... [19:22] And now, the moment you've all been waiting for .... [19:23] * WendyComa is now known as Wendymr [19:23] it's time for everyone's favorite psychiatrist ... [19:23] * EvilAuntY is now known as GeorgePsych [19:24] Here to present Best Original / Supporting Character is our special guest George! [19:24] Hi there, folcs! [19:24] ! Thanks for inviting me back to hand over my hard-won award to someone else. [19:24] I'm so happy that I'm not being allowed to keep it for ever, especially as I have to give it to one of these...characters...standing behind me on the stage- [19:24] * GeorgePsych shoots a glare over his shoulder - "Quit shoving!" [19:24] As I was saying. These characters- [19:25] * GeorgePsych trips forward and nearly falls over the front of the stage. [19:25] Okay, you'll have to excuse me while I have words. [19:25] * traceylyn is now known as traceafk [19:25] * GeorgePsych turns around and crosses his arms over his ample chest. [19:25] Okay, listen up, you people! [19:25] Brenda and Francine, would you please stop doing high kicks like you're still on the club dance floor? [19:25] I know you're excited, but you're making Jake nervous. His arm's still in a sling after falling out of that tree and besides, I think his kids are in the audience. [19:26] Let's keep things PG or under, okay? [19:26] And Phillip? [19:26] Phillip?? [19:26] PHILLIP!!! [19:26] Put that cigarette out and turn the volume down...no, you can't use headphones instead. [19:26] Jeez, teenagers today... Lucy, what are you doing? [19:26] David and Anna are already engaged - they don't need a matchmaker, okay? [19:27] Put down the mistletoe and just shut...no, I do not want to kiss you, Lucy. [19:27] Your sister is married to Clark Kent, and he's stronger than he looks. Trust me. [19:27] * GeorgePsych turns back to face the audience. [19:27] Sorry about that. Someone better hand me that envelope before all hell breaks loose up here. [19:28] * GeorgePsych grabs the envelope from Tricia [19:28] * GeorgePsych searches for his glasses... [19:28] Sh- -ugar. [19:28] Okay, anyone got a magnifying glass? [19:29] Thanks, Wendy. [19:29] Okay, let's see... [19:29] The winner is... [19:29] Good Samaritan by Aria! [19:30] [BanAnna SOUND] [19:30] * GeorgePsych grabs Jake by his good hand and drags him to the front of the stage [19:31] Okay, it looks like Jake is overwhelmed, so we'll just give him a gentle pat on the back [19:31] And wave to his kids in the audience, okay? [19:32] * newsgrl has joined #kerthawards [19:32] * GeorgePsych plods off the stage [19:32] * lkfanfic has joined #kerthawards [19:32] I'm sure Aria will be thrilled by her win! [19:32] * GeorgePsych is now known as EvilAuntY [19:32] Thank you George for doing us this honor!! [19:33] Congrats Aria! [19:33] And now, here to present Best New Author is our very own Wendy! [19:33] * Wendymr snaps out of her coma [19:33] * DocClean has quit IRC (Signed off) [19:34] Before I get ready to present New Author, I just want to slip in another quick fundraiser commercial [19:34] Since you all love George so much... [19:34] there is a George story on the DVD! [19:34] Yet another incentive to rush out and donate! :))) [19:34] I’m honoured to have been asked to present the award for Best New Author this year. We’ve been incredibly lucky once again to have some truly excellent new writers join us in 2005. Twelve years after Lois and Clark was first screened, and seven years after it finished with that unresolved cliffhanger, our fandom still attracts some of the best fanfic authors around. [19:34] To introduce you to our nominees this year, I can do no better than let them speak for themselves. [19:35] Our first nominee is David. Based in Australia, David’s introduction to fandom was last year’s Kerth ceremony! Now, of course, it feels as if he’s always been with us. How could we forget these haunting lines, from An Affair To Remember? [19:35] He closed his eyes and forced himself to concentrate. Where did he need to be? What did he need to do? But the effort was in vain. Every time he closed his eyes and tried to remember, all he saw was a vast darkness broken up by tiny splinters of light flashing in front of him, gone as fast as they appeared. Hurtling past him like bullets... Memories, [19:35] just out of his reach. He knew if he could grab one, hold onto it... understand it... just one [19:35] of the tiny specks... [19:35] He opened his eyes slowly and a quiet sigh escaped as he regarded the stranger in the mirror. The empty eyes that stared back haunted him. [19:35] * ccmx has quit IRC (Read error: EOF from client) [19:35] "Who are you?" he mumbled at his reflection. [19:35] L is our second nominee. She’s definitely not *new*, as she’s been around on the boards for years posting her epic fic Long, Strange Trip. Real life got in the way for a while and she finally managed to finish it last year, and it deservedly won her this nomination. [19:35] “Clark, you’re babbling. I’m used to that from Lois – but never really from you!” [19:35] “My counterpart in that world was the leader of the Kryptonian invasion. The leader of the Kryptonians in fact, AND the one who held her hostage – and did… bad things… to her,” Clark said glumly. [19:35] Perry sat staring at the young man in horror for what seemed like an eternity. [19:35] Clark…evil. Clark as an evil dictator. A ruthless ruler of worlds who hurts and abuses women like Lois for his own pleasure. [19:36] Our third nominee is Snave, who has given us some truly delightful fic about the children of Lois and Clark, who have some very special gifts. Meet Emma, Lois and Clark’s daughter, in Cherub: [19:36] * EvilAuntY has quit IRC (Quit) [19:36] * ccmx has joined #kerthawards [19:36] Then she remembered. She could fly. Maybe she could fly right out to the boat and save the man. [19:36] But it was so *very* far away. She had never flown more than a few trips around the house; and this was a much longer distance. This was almost as far as the drive to school! If she could not go that far, she would fall into the ocean and drown herself. [19:36] But the man was drowning already! Maybe he was already drownded. [19:36] Emma took a quavering breath and thought, *up*! Her feet cleared the grassy ground, and she began to move hesitantly forward. [19:36] TicAndToc is our fourth nominee for best new author. She’s been around for a couple of years, posting lovely and thoughtful feedback on the boards and becoming an invaluable GE. Last year she ventured to dip her toe into the water of writing, and so far she hasn’t looked back. Here’s an extract from Cloud Nine, showcasing her lovely touch with humour: [19:36] And the first time she swatted him in the chest - that was another four-incher. He was incredibly lucky she’d swatted backwards over her shoulder at him as they were entering the elevator. If she’d been facing him, his secret would have been toast. [19:36] He had been learning to control at least *some* of his reactions to her, though. [19:36] Slowly. [19:36] Or at least hide them. He probably appeared very clumsy to Lois, with his shifting and stumbling and staggering… or maybe he just appeared crazy. [19:37] And really, he could only stagger backwards - as if she’d caught him unaware - once or twice at the most. He could only appear to stumble, or shift around in his chair, a couple of times before she was bound to start wondering what on earth was the matter with him. [19:37] Also nominated is tvnerdgirl, also from Canada (Yay!) and whose Revelations in Captivity kept us entertained and on tenterhooks for poor Clark. Take a look: [19:37] "I believe you," she whispered bleakly. "And I understand what you gave up, and I'm sorry I made it seem like it was a lesser sacrifice. It wasn't. But that isn't the point. The point is, you would have let me grieve for you. You would have taken Clark Kent away from me and replaced him with...with Superman. You didn't even give me the choice. I don't know that I can forgive you for that, Clark." [19:37] "I never thought you'd be disappointed to be left with Superman," was all he could think so say. It didn't matter if he dug himself in deeper now. Whatever hope he had harboured was gone, replaced with the cold realization that he had lost her. [19:37] "Well, I guess that shows how little you know me." She shook her head regretfully. "Just so you know, I kissed you earlier because I was in love with Clark Kent. Another lie that I happened to fall for, I suppose." [19:37] And last but not least, our final nominee for Best New Author is Susan Young. Whether it’s her humorous and WAFFy Cheese of the Month, or her thought-provoking Smart Teens, Susan came onto the writing scene with a bang. Consider this: [19:38] The minor fibs like the ones in the current edition of the Daily Planet proved Clark Kent had a major character flaw. Clark was outside the bank while Superman freed the hostages. Clark was attending the press conference while Superman was giving the speech. Clark was writing his story while Superman happened to drop by with a few more details. Clark Kent was a habitual liar. [19:38] What really appalled Phillip, however, were the blatant deceptions the public at large swallowed like candy. He had been sure Clark was going to be busted two years ago when Diana Stride had set out to prove his real identity. But no; somehow, Mr. Kent had managed to project a hologram of Superman, and despite the totally obvious wobble, [19:38] people bought it! A few days ago, again, he had been sure that Kent's secret was done for when the Dirt Digger published a photo of Superman and Lois Lane in bed together. But people chose instead to accept a carefully worded statement filled with a bunch of b.s. about trust, honor, and truth. Unbelievable! [19:38] How could the world not know Clark Kent was Superman? Phillip let out a derisive snort. He'd known that since he was twelve. [19:38] So here’s our very talented line-up. And who will be taking away the tiara this year? Tricia, the envelope, please... [19:38] * Wendymr will NOT fumble or drop it... [19:38] * Kaethel sets mode: -v JulieS [19:39] [BanAnna SOUND] [19:39] In a very, very talented line-up, I am told that the result was decisive [19:39] David!!!! [19:39] [BanAnna SOUND] [19:39] * Kaethel sets mode: +v KSaraSara [19:39] And I win our bet! [19:39] * KSaraSara is now known as Dave8 [19:39] * Dave8 passes out [19:39] * Dave8 peers out at the audience... [19:39] A tiara, eh? [19:40] Good thing I've got 5 wives ;) [19:40] * Dave8 is now known as KSaraSara [19:40] all right, I'm no good at winging it, but... [19:41] I would like to say that, from the beginning, Dave insisted that he wouldn't win this. [19:41] And if he had a chance, he was too modest to want to even compete. [19:41] But he's got 5 wives ;) [19:41] So we told him he had to. [19:42] Anyway... congratulations to Dave, an incredibly talented new author. May he write many more stories! [19:42] And that goes for the rest of you new authors as well!! [19:42] * Psychofurbal has joined #kerthawards [19:42] congrats again Dave! [19:43] and Thank you Sara for accepting on his behalf ... [19:43] And now, before our last category, it's time for another commercial [19:43] * Kaethel sets mode: +v Lab-Rat [19:43] (and some announcements) [19:44] Okay, so let's end the evening on some more edge-of-the-seat thrills – and this first one's a doozy. [19:44] * Kaethel sets mode: +v Saskia [19:44] If At First You Don't Succeed [19:44] By M L Thompson [19:44] * Kaethel sets mode: -v Saskia [19:44] "I’ll have to call you back," Luthor said, rising to his feet as he hung up the phone. "Superman, to what do I owe this honor?" [19:44] "I’m just here to clean up a little dirt," said Superman, walking directly to Luthor. Grabbing him by the collar, he walked over to dangle Luthor over the edge of the balcony. "Someone should have done this a long time ago." [19:45] "Superman, please! You’re not going to drop me. It’s not the superheroish thing to do. So why don’t you just put me down?" There was no fear in Luthor’s voice as if he were absolutely confident that he was in no danger from Superman. [19:45] "You are a miserable excuse for a human being, Luthor. You’re responsible for... who knows how many deaths. How many people have had their lives destroyed because of you? This world would be a better place without you in it." [19:45] "Probably. But you’re not going to hurt me. It’s not in your nature." [19:45] "And I don’t like the way you look at Lois Lane. What are your intentions towards her?" [19:46] "She’s a beautiful woman. I would have thought my ‘intentions’ were obvious. Now stop embarrassing yourself and let me go. If you don’t let me go immediately, I’m going to... Aaaaaaaaahhhhhh!" [19:46] Clark watched as Lex Luthor plummeted towards the street, flinching slightly when the sound of the ‘splat’ echoed back to him. "Well, he did tell me to let him go," Clark said with a shrug of his shoulders before floating off the balcony and back into the sky. [19:46] To Be Continued.... [19:46] [19:46] And from: [19:46] Halloween [19:46] By Nan Smith [19:46] "Clark, if Lex finds you with me he'll kill you, too. You have to get away from me and stay away." [19:47] "I'm already on his hit list," Clark said softly. "My spies say he's ordered me killed, as well as Superman. When I found out what you'd done, I knew I had to find you before he did." [19:47] A long silence, and then the sudden rustle of movement. Clark said softly, "I won't let him harm you. Trust me." [19:47] "Clark, you know what he's capable of better than anybody! You told me what he was!" [19:47] "Yes, I do know. But you're safe with me. I guarantee it." [19:47] How could he guarantee Lois Luthor's safety? Lois wondered. He couldn't even guarantee his own. [19:47] "Clark, don't be crazy! He's going to kill both of us if he catches us!" [19:48] "If he tries, we'll get him on attempted murder." Clark sounded very sure of himself. "Don't you think I'd get some backup? Superman is keeping an eye on us right now, but we need to get out of here before anybody gets curious." [19:48] "If I go back to your place, they'll just be waiting for me to show up there. That's why I didn't go there when I got away," Lois said. "They may have followed you, today." [19:48] "They would have, I'm sure, if they could have found me," Clark said quietly. "But you see, I knew they'd be watching my place as soon as I realized what you'd done -- and I realized it before they did. I've been -- somewhere else." [19:48] "Oh. But Clark, how did you find me? Bobby said he's never met you, and I didn't tell you about him." [19:48] "I know. But somebody else did. She knows you pretty well." [19:48] "She?" [19:49] "Yes. There's more going on here than you realize. Somebody helped me. She wanted to find you almost as much as I did." [19:49] "Who --" [19:49] "Lois," Clark said. "Come around here, will you? I'd like you to meet Lois." [19:49] To Be Continued... [19:49] Oooooooooh! Wonder what happens next? You want to know, you know what to do! [19:50] yep! All you have to do is support the websites that give you so much enjoyment! :) [19:51] We've got another announcement now, and so I'm going to let Anna and Saskia explain to you what that is all about ;) [19:51] * Deejrhodes has joined #kerthawards [19:51] * Kaethel sets mode: +v Saskia [19:51] and Sara and Rachel... [19:52] * traceafk is now known as traceylyn [19:52] * Kaethel sets mode: +v Psychofurbal [19:52] * Saskia is now known as DanScardino [19:52] Hello everyone! Please, call me Daniel. [19:57] CONTRACTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! [19:57] okay, okay, okay. Sorry. But you know, in the US it's *still* April's Fool Day, and I couldn't help it. ;) [19:58] all right then, since I'm absolutely not pregnant, time to know what you decided to elect as the Best Story of the Year, aka Best Overall Story [19:58] and here's Sara to present this much coveted award. :) [19:58] * Kaethel sets mode: -v Saskia [19:58] Thanks, Kae :) [19:58] I've been a part of FoLCdom since dang near the beginning. I can never adequately express just how much I love this fandom and how much it means to me. There really are too many things to list, but since we're here to talk about fanfic... [19:58] The wealth writing talent in this fandom continually amazes me, and it just gets better. When I can read a story and fall in love with the characters all over again, how great is that? [19:58] After 13 years. [19:58] To steal a line from Lois... I realized something I never thought was possible. I love them more. [19:58] Today we're here to honor the best of the best. The authors who made us gasp and cry and laugh and cheer. The ones who give us new insights into old friends. The ones who put their hearts and souls into creating new worlds and adventures that we'd never thought possible. [19:59] In the past year, six authors have taken us on fantastic journeys of heartache, wonder, and discovery. [19:59] Aria helps us see Superman from an entirely different point of view, shows us that even Superman doesn't realize how many ways he can save a life, and tells us that even ordinary, Good Samaritans can be superheroes, too. [19:59] Wendy Richards takes us through the longest 24 Hours of our lives with Lois's life in her hands and no seeming way out, and there's nothing even Superman can do to save her. [19:59] CC Aiken introduces us to a future no one could have quite imagined - least of all a tenacious Lois Lane and a Superman who has just barely gotten his cape wet. She challenges us to decide whether we were really In A Better Place. [20:00] Chris Carr gives us and Alt Clark a glimmer of hope even though finding Lois truly does seem impossible. Maybe there's still a chance if Lois is Some Kind of Angel. [20:00] Leela leads us on a Long Strange Trip to a horrifying place where the only man Lois can see is the one she's terrified of. Can Alt Clark ever gain his Lois's trust? [20:00] Yvonne Connell shows us that our closest friends can sometimes be more than they seem... even when they're universes apart. She tells our broken hero: Clark Kent, This is Your Life. Don't be afraid to live it. And be careful who you trust. [20:00] To me, these stories are all winners, but tonight we can only pick one. [20:00] The nominees for Best Overall Story are... [20:00] 24 Hours - Wendy Richards [20:00] * ELK1^ has joined #kerthawards [20:00] Clark Kent, This Is Your Life - Yvonne Connell [20:00] * CatBru has quit IRC (Ping timeout) [20:00] Good Samaritan - Aria [20:01] In a Better Place - CC Aiken [20:01] Long Strange Trip - L [20:01] Some Kind of Angel - Chris Carr [20:01] and without further ado, really. ..
